![]() ![]() In May 31, 1809, Haydn died a happy man and a beloved composer. The most popular example of this is found in his Surprise Symphony when his light, simple melody is suddenly interrupted by a loud chord, "surprising" the audience. Perhaps more than any other music composer, Haydn is known for his wit. When he arrived, he discovered that he was a famous composer with many of his compositions being performed and sold as sheet music for many years. When the prince died, Haydn decided to travel to London. Haydn worked for the Prince for 30 years composing many symphonies and other works. His big break came when he was asked to be the court conductor for Prince Esterhazy, a wealthy Hungarian with an orchestra of his own. In his teens, Franz left the choir to begin working as a freelance musician and composing when he had time. At a very early age his parents, Mathias and Maria, recognized their son's musical talent and accepted an offer to allow schoolmaster and choirmaster, Johann Matthias Franck, to train young Franz as a musician. His childhood was an extremely musical one, singing together frequently as a family and with neighbors. Haydn had written mainly orchestral works and Italian operas to represent and entertain the court. The years in Eisenstadt and at Eszterháza (near Neusiedler Lake) where the prince had moved to in 1766 had been very productive years. When the orchestra was dismissed in 1790, Haydn moved to Vienna where he received an annual pension of 1,400 gulden. This position, which also included other services, was held by Haydn all his life. In 1761 he became second, in 1766 first Kapellmeister of Prince Esterházy in Eisenstadt. In 1759 Haydn became Kapellmeister of Count Karl Morzin in Lukavec (Bohemia) for whom he wrote his First Symphony in D major in the same year. He also composed his first major piano works, piano trios and serenades as well as his first stage work as early as 1752, the comic opera 'Der krumme Teufel' which is no longer extant. At Porpora's Haydn met music patrons, such as Baron Joseph of Fürnberg who arranged entertaining musical events at his country seat of Weinzierl and at whose suggestion Haydn wrote his first string trios ('Weinzierler') and his first string quartet in B flat major, probably around 1755. When he had to leave the choir in 1749 because his voice broke, he earned his living as a piano accompanist at Nicola Porpora's singing lessons and as a dance hall violinist.
